Ugh for Firefox

As much as I like Firefox, it really annoys me. As I was writing the last post, I closed another browser tab and the browser froze on me.

It shouldn't do that.

I may really have to switch to Safari or - gasp! - Opera and just use Firefox for website development.

Hopefully Firefox 3 will get the CPU/Memory usage under control. Not everyone has 2 gigs of memory in their computer or runs state-of-the-art systems.

Some Web Hosts You May Not Have Heard Of

Even though my server at Site5 has been behaving pretty well (since I got off my old server that should have been shot a long time ago - but they're still using and is still causing them problem) I've always felt that it is a good idea to have a backup hosting company in mind - just in case things go wrong. So I spent some time this weekend looking at other hosts. What should have taken me a couple hours turned into a day's surfing. It's absolutely amazing how looking for web hosts can suck all life out of you!

Vanilla Forum Goes Sponsored

Vanilla is no longer sweet.

The forum package Vanilla now has paid advertising links built into the download, according to its developer Mark.

Even though I don't use Vanilla, I think it's a decent program with a great goal. It's not phpbb-ish, but rather has a focus on the topics rather than the forum containers (much like bbPress. I do believe Mark has done a lot of good work on his projects.

Google selling space for Gmail and Picasa

2 Gigabytes not enough space for your Gmail needs? Fear not! Google will sell you more space! This is combined space for Gmail and Picasa and whatever else Google has. (Though it doesn't say anything about getting rid of the ads for paid users...

6 GB ($20.00 per year)
25 GB ($75.00 per year)
100 GB ($250.00 per year)
250 GB ($500.00 per year)

Me, I'm barely using any of my space there. 0.1 Gigabytes, actually.

The Invoice Machine
This is a pretty neat idea. Create and send invoices online. If you're a freelancer or just need to make the occasional invoice, this may beat spending a lot of money on a program (or getting Excel to look nice.)

(Note: I haven't tried this out myself. Just passing the info along.)

NuclearBB

nuclearbb logoWould you believe it? Yet another forum system! NulcearBB, still in alpha, is available.

While it looks just like every other phpbb-like sytem, I do have to say that I'm glad the developers didn't use blue for their site.

Scuttle gone?

scuttle logoSo today I looked up Scuttle for no apparent reason. (The site just came to me out of the blue.) And I found that it was down. (Here's a link from the Way Back Machine to the Scuttle front page from April, 2006.)
