Say what you want about the Chinese...

Tagged as:

Despite the fact that the Chinese government has an atrocious track record on human rights and the Communist regime runs roughshod over its own people, the Chinese sure know how to throw a party!

I'm not a huge Olympics fans (Go USA!) but I did decide to watch the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Damn that was amazing! Thousands of people performing near flawlessly in harmony to create what must be the largest live show ever produced. Ever. It was beautiful, intricate, precise.

One of my favorites was the tai chi/martial arts segment. (Plus, can you imaging a million of those guys marching into your country as soldiers? China really is a nation that on one hand should be noted as an ancient civilization that gave us so much throughout history and, on the other, be regarded with caution.)

A spectacular show.

How are you? haven't talked with you in ages, and I miss that...oh well

I unfortunately missed the opening, the first time that we lost power at the house in ages...and it had to be on the night of the opening ceremony! I did get to watch some of it, but I never did see the whole thing. I know it is online now, but I am reading the Twilight books...so no time (I did finish the first book in one night...scary) I still don't sleep, but lately I have also gotten addicted to a couple online, server based games.

hopefully I will talk with you soon.

I'm currently reading a book about the history of the CIA. (Legacy of Ashes - which may go a long way to show how screwed up our political system is.) (Which fits in with China, in a way. Screwed up politics and all.)

ah...yeah, it is pretty screwed up.

I am still reading books my kids (eldest mostly) are reading. She started the Twilight series and told me I "had to read it"...So I did. 4 books in 4 days. I think that has to have been my fastest reading to date (well over 2500 pages, and I remember every word) Other than that...all is running just about normal here. Still have way to many cats, headaches are a pain...more of the same.

...read a book that is to good to put down? it is like a drug...

I have only read about 5 books/series that have been that good. I went through some serious withdrawal today, which made me go to the bookstore for one of her other books. If this book isn't as good, I will be back there tomorrow, in hopes of finding something...anything to read. I know that Jane Austen and Tolkien will not do it (I already tried them)

My doctor put me on a new med, I don't think it is helping, I am not taking it anymore...hopefully, I will go back to my "normal" migraines.

I have missed talking to you.

I don't think I've ever seen "Jane Austen" and 'Tolkien' used in the same sentence...

And I'm still reading Legacy of Ashes - I try for a chapter or two a day. (600 pages, should be done before christmas!)

Hope your headaches get better. (I'm sure I've already recommended beating your head against a wall to help with it. Good thing I'm not a doctor, eh? Smiling )

lol

yeah, I do have some interesting trends in reading. Tolkien is definitely better than Jane Austen, for me. But I can blame Masterpiece theater. they ran "sense and sensibility" this spring, and I tend to read the books that inspired them. They also ran Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë...if I can break my addiction, I want to read that soon. I tried "Pride And Prejudice", but it not the right time.

tried the wall...it didn't work, the wall took the worst of it though. Oh well.

and the producers who make them into movies and tv shows! How dare they expose us to works that we'd never go out and find ourselves!

I did the same thing after watching some Mystery! episodes. (Margery Allingham is waaaay better than Agatha Christie.)

actually, it ruins it for the kids too. Eldest school will not allow her to read a book that is now a movie. That is one reason she wanted to read Twilight so quickly (other than the fact that all the girls are reading it) December it will be released as a movie...which makes it then not usable for book reports.

I think every Charles Dicken's book has been made into a movie.

Does this count tv shows?

yes.

I cant understand why they would not make the kids read the book then watch the movie, and have them point out some of the glaring differences. In almost all of the movies they are so much different than the books.

So then Masterpiece Theater will cause the downfall of Western Civilization. I knew this would happen! Smiling

oh well. at least it gives new authors a chance. Without them, the kids would have nothing to read. OF course, the books are only good for a short period of time, before they are made into movies.

what if a movie is made into a book? Does that count? After all, it wasn't a book to start with!
