Lost has finally done it. They finally come up with something so stupid that even I, a fan of the show, have to say enough is enough.
As you may know, Lost is a fantasy show. It does things that can't really happen in a basic drama. If a smoke monster showed up on Brothers & Sisters you just know that the writers have completely lost their minds. (No pun intended.) But on Lost you go with the strange stuff. Polar bear in the tropics? Okay. Dead people walking around the forest? Wicked. Lame one day, doing jumping jacks the next? Cool.
But what really lost me in this episode was the gun. And the fact that the gun didn't fire. And I don't know if I can forgive them for that.
The episode itself was primarily the flashback tale of what happened to Michael after he killed Libby and Anna Lucia and sold out his friends to get off of the island. He did make it off, but couldn't live with the fact that he killed two innocent people. (And telling Walt what he did didn't help matters any.) So back in New York City and unable to live with the guilt he tries to kill himself.
Michael's first suicide attempt by driving his car into a wall I could by. His injuries healed and since the island can heal people I could by the fact that a little of the island's 'magical' powers were still part of him. (And having the visions of dead people was a nice touch.)
But the second suicide attempt was utterly ridiculous and defied the 'laws' of the show. That gun should have fired. There's no other way around it. I would understand if the island still had a mental hold on Michael and he couldn't fire it. But pulling the trigger and nothing happens? Sorry, I can't buy that.
Then Tom (Mr. Friendly) shows up and we have Michael working for Ben on the freighter. With a bomb. And that bomb was another aspect of this episode I hated.
As Michael goes to blow up the ship a little flag pops up with a note saying "Not Yet." Huh? Oh come on. There's no reason for that. The world, even on Lost, doesn't work that way.
At least at the end Sayid turned Michael over to the Captain. We got that form of justice after this utterly horrible episode.
Bottom line: After the awesome "The Constant" with Desmond and the really good "Ji Yeon" with Sun and Jin, we were handed this crap. And to make matters worse, we have to wait a month or so to get any new episodes.
And if there was ever a "Jump The Shark" moment for Lost, it's the handgun that didn't go off.
