Thoughts on the 2007 ACMs

I've updated this page with the winners. I thought I did pretty good in the major male/female categories. George Strait was a big surprise for me, getting song of the year and single of the year. Way to go, George!

I also have to admit that Brad Paisley surprised me as the Top Male Vocalist. Honestly, he's not that enjoyable to listen to anymore. (I can't stand "Ticks.") A few years ago, this would be an appropriate win for him, but not this year. (Sorry, Brad. I guess after Celebrity, it's downhill from there...)

The Academy of Country Music is about to give out their awards, so it's time that I give out my predictions.

Well, not really predictions, but hopes. Or rather, who I think should win. I've used two designations. "My Pick" are who I'd like to win, and "Probably Win" are those that I think will. (I'm a bit annoyed that the Dixie Chicks weren't nominated for "Taking the Long Way." I LOVE that song. Of course, I usually only hear it on the Canadian country station...) Anyway...

My thoughts are under each category.

Entertainer of the Year
Brooks & Dunn
Kenny Chesney *MY PICK* *WINNER*
Tim McGraw
Rascal Flatts
George Strait

It'll probably be between Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney. But I've heard more good things about Kenny than Tim this year.

Top Male Vocalist
Kenny Chesney *MY PICK*
Toby Keith
Brad Paisley *WINNER*
George Strait
Keith Urban

Brad had his moment in the sun, and I got tired of Toby after all his political songs (now, I love America, but I do get tired of entertainers that constantly tell me how great or how bad this country is. I really just tuned out Toby for a while.)

Top Female Vocalist
Sara Evans
Faith Hill
Miranda Lambert
Martina McBride
Carrie Underwood *MY PICK* *WINNER*

Not my preference (I mean, hell, she promotes vandalism!) but I think she's one of the better in the group. (Sara being up there, too.) I think Faith is overrated. (Hate emails for that remark, methinks.) I'm not sure who Miranda Lambert is, and it's just not going to be Martina's year.

Top Vocal Group
Diamond Rio
Emerson Drive
Little Big Town
Lonestar
Rascal Flatts *MY PICK* *WINNER*

Honestly, they all sound about the same to me. I'm picking Rascal Flatts for Dawn's daughter.

Top Vocal Duo
Big & Rich
Brooks & Dunn *PROBABLY WIN* *WINNER*
Montgomery Gentry
Sugarland
The Wreckers *MY PICK*

I do like The Wreckers and Sugarland more than Brooks & Dunn, but Ronnie and Kix will most likely win.

Top New Male Vocalist
Rodney Atkins *WINNER*
Craig Morgan *PROBABLY WIN*
Chris Young

Six of one, half dozen of the other...

Top New Female Vocalist
Miranda Lambert *PROBABLY WIN* *WINNER*
Kellie Pickler
Taylor Swift

When I first heard Kellie Pickler's song, something about red shoes, I thought it wasn't very good. There was something off about it, maybe the harmony. Something. And I just didn't like Taylor Swift's "Tim McGraw." So that leaves the other person, whoever she is. (I know, I should just Google her...)

Top New Duo or Vocal Group
Heartland *PROBABLY WIN*
Little Big Town *WINNER*
The Wreckers *MY PICK*

My Pick is Just 'cuz I love them. The Probably Win's means I'm living in reality. Most of the time.

Album of the Year
Hillbilly Deluxe, Brooks & Dunn *PROBABLY WIN*
It Just Comes Natural, George Strait
Me and My Gang, Rascal Flatts
Some Hearts, Carrie Underwood *WINNER*
These Days, Vince Gill

I don't own any of these albums. I just hope for all that is holy Vince Gill doesn't win.

Single Record of the Year
"Before He Cheats," Carrie Underwood
"Give It Away," George Strait *WINNER*
"I Loved Her First," Heartland *MY PICK*
"What Hurts the Most," Rascal Flatts
"Would You Go With Me," Josh Turner

Easily the best song in that list.

Song of the Year
"Amarillo Sky"
-Artist: Jason Aldean Writers: John Rich, Big Kenny, Rodney Clawson, Bart Pursley

"Before He Cheats" *PROBABLY WIN*
-Artist: Carrie Underwood Writers: Chris Tompkins, Josh Kear

"Give It Away" *WINNER*
-Artist: George Strait Writers: Bill Anderson, Buddy Cannon, Jamey Johnson

"If You're Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows)"
-Artist: Rodney Atkins Writers: Sam and Annie Tate, Dave Berg

"Would You Go With Me"
-Artist: Josh Turner Writers: Shawn Camp, John Scott Sherrill

I for the life of me can't place Amarillo Sky. I'm not a Josh Turner fan (that voice is just too deep.)

And that's the list. I think I'll get at least two right. I'll update this post after the ACMs with the winners.

Also, I left out Video of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year. I didn't see any of the videos, and wont comment on it (except I hope Brooks and Dunn get it. I like Hillbilly Deluxe. I also like the song Seashore of Old Mexico by George Straight.)

All the nominations are listed here. The awards show will be on May 15 and will air on CBS.

Miranda Lambert is a true songwriter/country singer. I am not much a country music listener (Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill is as far in as I venture, and they're both quite pop). But Miranda's CD was given to me 2 years ago, and this year, I finally realized how amazing it is (and it went platinum-sold 1 million copies- this year.) I just picked up her second album a couple days ago, and it is just as good as her first. Try her music, but it let it grow if you don't like it immediately =)

Carrie Underwood, winner? Please, does it only take a pretty face to win. Look at the talent of Martina Mcbride, Faith Hill, etc. I guess a young face that guys think look good- wins regardless of singing ability. THink about it.

Country Music Fans are sick, role model, keying cars, carving names in seats of cars, etc. - role model for young girls- it’s a shame.
