Yahoo! Domain Renewals Increase to $34.95/year?

I just received the same message from Yahoo. I thought I was losing my mind for a minute. The thing which burns me is that I registered two domains from those crooks a few hours ago. I did it on behalf of two friends who thought it was great to get a domain for $10. Well ... it's time to Go, Daddy!

it's true and it's a damn shame. i'm transferring all my domains from yahoo to a much more affordable register. i was completed devasted at this email i just got hours ago.

So I take it that Go Daddy is the best value out there right now? I just wonder if they won't be tempted to jack up their prices a bit too.

BTW, I wonder if there isn't something a tad illegal about the fact Yahoo still lists a renewal fee of $12.95 for anyone buying a domain. Obviously, if you buy a domain today, you will not be able to renew for $12.95.

... becomes the Great Go Daddy Migration! Last week, I transferred a Yahoo domain for the grand total of $6.99. I just got confirmation that the transaction went smooth as silk, and Go Daddy now has one of my domains. Soon, they will all be there.

Unfortunately for you, even ten dollars is too much money. 1and1 sells domains for $6.99. Much more like it.

I did the same things. I moved my domains out of yahoo to http://www.luckyregister.com just for $6.95. I really do not understand the reason why yahoo incrases too much like that

They might be insane, or probably not.

Perhaps they think they can raise the book value of their company by quadrupling the cost of all their renewals, which of course will never happen, but for now they look like their future earnings are larger. Something to do with justifying the price that failed the Microsoft deal?

Or, my favorite theory, maybe the WANT to get rid of everyone except large lazy corporations that don't mind paying $34.95 per domain, because maybe their profit margin is too low to want to stay in this line of business.

Or maybe some analyst or manager there is about to jump ship and gave a wacky analysis that calculated a low level of lost accounts, just to get even with his soon-to-be-former employer.

Either way, or whatever reason, they aren't making any friends. But it will be interesting to read the real story some day!

I think is may be illegal for Yahoo to charge such a high fee. I hope the Federal trade commision gets involved. Yahoo used to be my home page. No More. Yahoo will lose my buiseness forever.

I agree. Having been subjected to the auto-renewal feature prior to the expiry date, one never gets the full year at the price. I also find you cannot remove your Yahoo! Wallet. Same experience? Domain regersted by Yahoo will automatically get renewal, I was charged $64 for two domains never use, just because I didn't check Yahoo mail on time. I surely will cancel two domains and will never use any service of Yahoo in the future due to this lesson.

It was a good thing I happened to check my Yahoo! email, otherwise I would've had no clue about the outrageous increase. I'll be calling Yahoo! tomorrow to see if they really want to keep me as a customer. If not, GoDaddy here I come!

You can do everything with go daddy as you could with Yahoo! correct?

I agree, this is unethical and bad move for Yahoo! They have lost many customer since the price change, and I can't imagine they will gain any in the process. Go Daddy is the service I have used the whole time, and I have been really happy with them. Unfortunately for Yahoo! this might be the beginning of the end for their domain registration service.

I got charged $70 for 2 domains yesterday from yahoo, i received no notice. Funny thing is I had transferred one of them to godaddy months ago and they still charged me for it. I call customer service and they refunded the money, but we will see how long it take to get the money back, I'm it will take at least 2 more calls. Even if they refund everyone just think about how much interest they are earning on other peoples money by keeping millions from day to day that is not theirs

Happened to me as well. Jumped on their 1.99 special over a year ago renewal came was due back in jan of this year @ $34.95 x 3 domains. I was like what the frack im not paying that. Since those domains were used for small projects it was no big loss. I'll stick to moniker.com and my own web hosting I use to register all all my domains from now on. Dont care how good he deal is.

A good post and good advice to the unwary. Here is some advice that may be helpful to readers (I am not in any way affiliated with these companies, except as a customer):

(1) Moniker (www.moniker.com) offers .com registrations for $8 per year.

(2) IXWebHosting (www.IXWebHosting.com) offers one free domain registration (with annual renewals also being free) with their hosting plan (which by the way is great - good hosting prices and top notch technical support).

(3) In the cases of certain ccTLD's (such as Switzerland's), you can register domains directly at the national registry yourself, by simply creating an account there. The Swiss regitsry (http://www.switch.ch/en), for example, provides for online payment, domain renewal, and DNS configuration, all without intermediation by any domain registrar. Depending upon the particular registry involved, you can sometimes save considerably as compared to working through a traditional domain registrar.

Paying $35 for generic extension renewals is highway robbery - in fact, some of the domain registrars offering generic extension renewals in the $8-$10 range will even give you a discount if you renew multiple domains and/or extend for more than one year. It is quite possible that with the discounts, you could come in at about 20% of what Yahoo is charging.

I'm moving all my domains the F out of yahoo.

At this time I can't even f'ing access my domain control panel because my log in id is an SBC/AT&T email and the bastards did some S and when I try to log in I get redirected to ATT and can't f'ing log in at the ATT page, it just keeps redirecting to the same page.
Same f'ing thing trying to use the contact form, the damn piece of S keeps redirecting to the same page. No f'ing phone number either listed.

I'm now off to google for a contact email address or phone number.

These dumbasses charged my 'expired' credit card on file for the same renewal fee.
I've moved my domain out of yahoo and they still charged the credit card. Out of nowhere I get an email with the receipt and no contact information, any replies bounce back. Looking in the account it still lists that they own the domain.

I really hate yahoo more after reading this. I have never hosted any domains through them but does not surprise me that they are so expensive. Everything they offer is expensive, such as an inclusion in their Link Directory, almost 200 a year, are you serious?

I really love using free domain like yahoo.The search function and speed is pretty good!
