Primary hard disk drive 0 not found
Turned on my Dell PC this morning, went to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee, came back to find this nasty note on my PC:
Primary hard disk drive 0 not found
Crap.
This is going to be a long, long day.
And to top that off, my iMac (which I'm currently on) is making some funny noises.
Crap.

I'm not buying Dell
I'm not buying Dell computers anymore.
Not becuse they're crappy computers (hell, they do work) but because of the proprietary nature of their innards.
If I find out I have to buy a new hard disk through dell, and the ones at the Big Box Store wont work, I'll be pissed.

well the hard drive seems to be the standard type; it fit in an old HP computer I have. However, the hd is toast.

Any IDE or SATA drive
Any IDE or SATA drive (depending on which your computer uses) should work fine if you have a Dell desktop computer. With very few exceptions, Dell systems use industry standard components.
If you have not already contacted support feel free to email me the service tag and I will be more than happy to check the warranty status, and send out a replacement if the system is still covered.

Thanks, Larry, but this
Thanks, Larry, but this computer is way out of warranty. It's a Dimension 2200 bought about 5 years ago.

In that case, if you wanted
In that case, if you wanted to purchase a replacement, the system uses ATA-66 or ATA-100 drives. Depending on the size of the hard drive you got you might need to update the BIOS (depending on what is installed) to read the entire thing.
The latest update for the Dim2200 is A04 (http://ftp.dell.com/bios/BD220004.exe) dated 9/13/2002. This file asks for a floppy disk, then formats it as a boot disk for doing the update.
If you needed other drivers they are all available from the Dell support website (http://support.dell.com then click Download & Drivers).
If you had any other questions on the system I'll be happy to answer them.

Me too, What size is the new
Me too,
What size is the new hard drive that you bought. It is very likely that your bios on your old Dell will not support the new capacity that your purchased. There may be a BIOS update available for your system that will correct this.
Best of luck,
Keith

BIOS OPTIONS
MAKE SURE THE HARD DISKS ARE ENABLED IN THE "BOOT DEVICES" SETTINGS IN THE BIOS!!!!
There must be a tick beside the hard disk, if there isn't - hit the spacebar key.
This should fix your problems.

Hard Drive Not Found Dell Dimension
I have had a similar problem with my Dell computer, it turned out that one of the drives in a RAID 0 array (a RAID 0 array that I had no idea existed BTW! I just thought it was a single hard disk) had failed.
Now here is where I would err on the side of caution, before mine failed iut started making unusual noises, if your iMac is doing this I would be backing your data up asap.
I eventually got my data back by using www.abcdatarecovery.co.uk based in Sheffield UK.
It wasn't cheap tho!

Burnout- First isolate the
Burnout- First isolate the software possibilities. Go into Bios (tap F2 at boot up) and check "Drives". Make sure its enabled.Try resetting the BIOS (turn on all 3 lights:numlock, caps, and scroll, then hit ALT + E, then ALT + F, then ALT +
it'll reboot automatically. If still no HDD, run system diagnostics (tap F12 and choose "diagnostics") start with "custom tests/ HDD/ confidence test" that a fairly quick test, but you can do a full scale HDD test by just choosing "all tests" under HDD catagory.
Or you can use the "Resource CD" that came with the PC, put it in the drive and boot from it (tap F12 and choose CD/DVD drive) and run diagnostics from that.
I also think maybe if theres a RAM problem, it won't find the HDD, Open the memory door on the back and reseat the RAM.If you have two Ram modules, try removing one and boot. Then try the other.
Try using a soft pencil eraser and cleaning the HDD connector on the HDD. Clean off any crumbs afterwards, reseat and boot.
Let us know how you make out.

I've got this problem too.
I turn my Dell Dimension 1100 on (3rd hand) , i get this message, i reboot, i get this message.
Primary drive 0 not found F1 F2 blahblahblah.
After repeating the process about 50 times (literally 50 times!) it works.
But, if i dont enter my password quick enough i get a horrible blue screen message in technical which i dont understand.
When i finally log on, my sound is very jolty and skippy, also my World of Warcraft has minor lag which is very inconvenient.
Im 15, i have no money, birthday has already been and i do not want to replace until at least christmas when i can stop buying shitty dells and get a decent PC.
Please help

can't help. My laptop is doing something similar (also a Dell) and I had to go to system restore, but that doesn't always help. Might have to either reinstall windows or delete it and make it a linux machine.

You have two options
Marcus, you can try resetting the hard drive first, it could also work and you won't have to buy a replacement. However, if the same error still occurs after resetting, then you really have to buy a new one.
Hope this helps.

Dell support would probably be best for this
Check cables, power, and BIOS settings at boot.
