on the nagging that is Mellel

Today I downloaded the 30 day trial of a writing program called Mellel. It's a word processor designed for "creative and technical writing." It looks pretty neat (and much more Mac-centric than Word can ever hope to be.) But...

Every couple of hours an annoying reminder keeps popping up telling me that I'm using a trial version and that I should pay up to use the product.

Every two hours or so. (I've not timed it, though.)

Now I completely understand that I'm using trial software. (goddamnit it just did it again as I'm writing this!) I know there's a 30 day limit. But I also understand that I have 30 days to decide if I like it enough to pay for it.

I understand why a piece of trial software has the "X days left of trial" notice when you open the program. I can understand having the notice come up once a day (24 hour period or so) for people like me who don't turn off their computers or close down programs. But this is nonsense.

Instead of giving me the time to check out the features, they keep nagging me to pay for it. And right now there's no way I'm going to. While the program may be great, those popups they have are driving me crazy.

So just based on that, I can't recommend the product. Because I can't use it without going absolutely crazy.

Methinks it's time to take another look at Scrivener.
