Scuttle gone?

scuttle logoSo today I looked up Scuttle for no apparent reason. (The site just came to me out of the blue.) And I found that it was down. (Here's a link from the Way Back Machine to the Scuttle front page from April, 2006.)

Scuttle, for those not in the know, is (err, was?) a link bookmarking site. Think Digg but without the community. You created an account and through your browser, adding links to sites that interested you. Plus, you could tag the links and others could see what you linked to. Pretty simple.

But there were problems. Such as spam. And there was a lot of it. I don't know if the site is down because of spam or because of a lack of interest from the users (or the developers.)

Scuttle wasn't just a web site, it offered the program as a free open-source download so anyone could put Scuttle on their site. Unfortunately, development seems to have stopped on that. No new releases since April 2006. But the download had problems, too. No user administration, so you had to delete tags in the database.

It was a good concept; maybe someone else will pick it up.

Just ran into this issue today. Haven't heard the news. I ran scuttle on a site once. I ran into way too much spam, to the point that it was clogging my server with traffic. They may have not yet found a way to fix this and gave up. Who knows?
