Habari, Drupal, Wordpress and Polls

One of the things that really bothers me about WordPress is polls. Now there are a couple of really good poll plugins for WordPress, but if you want to make the poll as part of the blog hierarchy, as part of the normal chronology of the site, you have to create the poll in one screen then add the tags to your post. Not really a friendly way to go.

In Drupal, you create the poll, and if you have the polls content type set to appear on the front page, it'll be there after you submit it.

Maybe this is a reason Habari should consider content types. And look at Drupal instead of WordPress for inspiration.

That would be a basic concept change in wordpress. While in Drupal all content has a type, in wordpress all content is "blogentry" (and since some months additionally there's "static page").
See the effort the "static page" brought to the admin interface in wordpress - it's not meant to have a content "type"! It's not the concept.

WP is number one blogging engine, Drupal is number one CMS - no need to fight here. Just take the system that meets your needs!

all that would really need to change is some new functions in wp core and a new database row for content types. Then the plugins can identify themselves and be made available. Most of the work would be on the plugin code.

Thus making wordpress more extensible.

Habari does indeed support the notion of content types. It's not being used very aggressively right now, of course.

The Habari database has a table, posttype, which is designed to allow plugins and site administrators create their own content types. The two default types are "entry" (regular blog posts) and "page" (static pages).

The long-term plan is to provide plugin hooks on the post composition screen, so that plugins that add new content types can add new form fields as needed when composing a post of that content type.

We've considered allowing for a complete override of the post composition screen, and may yet work that into the core code; but I don't think that'll happen in the immediate future.

I had a choice of either WP or Drupal and ultimately choose Drupal for my site. Both are great products and a lot better than many "pay" services out there by a mile.

No doubt that wordpress is easier to use. But the developers have their heads stuck way back in 2004. With Drupal, you know it's going forward.

Haven't tried Drupal yet since WordPress works for me and it serves its purpose. Eventually, I'll have to try Drupal out and see where it takes me.

Seems a lot of people follow the "if-its-not-broke-don't-fix-it" ethos. This is probably Wordpress's greatest competitive advantage in the CMS market as there are certainly millions of people using with better solutions (for their needs) out there.

As I newcomer to blogging tools (Mambo/Joomla user), I find Drupal powerful and easier to customize than wordpress. And wordpress is good for one man blogging , Drupal for community blogging.

Audrey appears correct, WP is the better platform for a one man blogging show, Drupal seems geared more towards community blogging.
