GIMPShop

I've heard of GIMP before; it's an open-source image editing piece of software akin to PhotoShop/Fireworks. I've never tried to use it, however, since, 1. it may have had a Linux requirement that I couldn't meet (meaning it required Linux, which I didn't have; that's right, I'm not that much of a geek) and 2. the source files weren't packaged in a way that I could use without ripping out hair, nails, etc.

It seems now that GIMPShop comes to the rescue.

That's not the developers site (which happens to be this) but does have links to the downloads.

Is it any good? I don't know. I haven't tried it yet. But I do want to. I don't have any graphic editing software on my PC but I do have Fireworks on my iMac. My old, slow iMac.

So if you're tried it, is it any good?

I downloaded GimpShop recently and it runs really slow on my 4 yr old eMac like Matrix dodging bullets slow. Illustrator CS2 works rather well on my eMac so... I don't know. Maybe, it's the x11.

i haven't tried it on my grape iMac (since I do have fireworks which works well for me) but I have a feeling it would be slow for me on it.

I did download it on my dell laptop (almost as old as my iMac) and it seems to run okay there.

I just can't make heads or tails of its interface. I haven't really figured out how to do anything on it except blur portions of images. That could be because I don't use photoshop so I have that learning curve to overcome.

Know what you mean. Steep learning curve. Illustrator CS2 went untouched for a few months before I started using it. I was really comfortable using Canvas and didn't want to relearn things but now, I use it all the time.

As much as I like to support open source applications, the advantage of Photoshop/Illustrator is that I can run down to the bookstore or library and pick up a book on the subject. (We all remember books, right Smiling )

And I don't mind the learning curve as long as I know learing it will help me. I probably should get Photoshop so I can have that skill set; not sure GIMP will help me with that. But it's new, and time will tell.
