Thoughts on the ACM Winners

(NOTE: This post is from 2006. For my thoughts on 2007, see this post.

Although it's a week late, here are my thoughts on the Association of Country Music award winners.

(Winners List and Nominees List)

Entertainer of the Year: Kenny Chesney
I've always felt that Kenny Chesney was overrated. I never understood his appeal. Sure, a lot of people would probably vote to have him appear in nothing but a cowboy hat (and has he ever appeared in public without his hat on?) but he's just a good singer.

However, out of the other nominees (Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban) he was probably the best choice. (I'm not a big fan of the rest. They're good, but Best? eh.)

Top Female Vocalist: Sara Evans
Yay, Sara! I've been a fan since her debut album, Three Chords and the Truth and this win was long overdue!

Top Vocal Duo: Brooks & Dunn
I actually prefer Montgomery Gentry.

Top Male Vocalist: Keith Urban
Like Kenny Chesney, I don't understand the appeal of Keith Urban. Sure, he's from Australia, singing 'American' country music, but, again, what's the big deal with him? (And when he sings about having his six-string on his knee, is that a euphemism of some sort?)

Top Vocal Group: Rascal Flatts
Again, what's the deal with Rascal Flatts? Well, I probably just don't relate to their songs.

The ACM/Home Depot Humanitarian Award: Vince Gill
I HATE Vince Gill. No, I abhor this man. I put him in the same list of people I hate with Pat Robertson. I hate him that much. Why? His wife, Amy Grant.

You may remember that Amy was married to Gary Chapman. Then Amy left Gary for Vince. Now Amy was a christian music singer (she had quite a few albums before her "Hearts in Motion" album that put her on the pop charts.) As avowed Christians, Amy left Gary for Vince. Now I'm sure at Amy's and Gary's wedding, vows were exchanged along the lines of "death do we part." Not until someone else comes that I fancy better.

Sanctity of marriage my ass.

(Now don't give me that tripe about even christian couples not getting along well or somesuch. Amy was a public christian figure not living up to her god's will. She will never get my respect, nor will Vince.) So even his humanitarian work means nothing to me.

Top New Female Vocalist: Carrie Underwood
Wow, an American Idol makes good! That's all I know about her: she was on American Idol. May have even won. I don't care, really. But I have no idea who the other two nominees are (Miranda Lambert and Julie Roberts) so I shall not comment further.

Single Record of the Year: Carrie Underwood
Should have been either Sugarlands "Baby Girl" or Brad Paisley's "Alcohol."

Top New Duo or Vocal Group: Sugarland
I agree with this. Great group.

Top New Male Vocalist: Jason Aldean
Who the hell is Jason Aldean? I know of the other two (Billy Currington and Craig Morgan) are.

Album of the Year: Brad Paisley Time Well Waisted
For me it would have been a toss up between Brad and Sugarland.

Song of the Year: Brooks & Dunn's Believe
I don't even recall this song. "Baby Girl" from Sugarland would have been my choice.

You need to listen to the radio more.

Believe is one of the strongest and touching country songs of he past three years.

I can't tell by your ranting if you are anti-religious or not, but it is a deeply inspirational song.

Your lack of information is surprising, not knowing anything about Carrie Underwood, or Jason Aldean, but your more glaring misquided thought is your comments about Amy Grant

She was never married to Gary Allan. She was married to Gary Chapman, another contemporary christian singer.

After the divorce in 1999, she and Gill married a year later.

Just thought you might like the correct information.

Thanks for the correction on Chapman.

I'm trying to think of what the song "Believe" sounds like, but I can't get it into my head right now.

I know about Carrie Underwood. She sang Jesus take the Wheel, then she sang about vandalizing an ex's vehicle.

I've heard Aldean's songs, but, still, nothing too memorable.

And I still can't stand Vince Gill.

I will not tell my daughter what you think of Rascal Flatts...she is totally in love with them. I personnally like Kenny Chesney, but I really like his songs.(oh, he and I share a birthday- he is 2 years older) Of course Sara was the right choice, but I also really like her music...

Brooks and Dunn or Montgomery Gentry...this is a toss-up. I like both.

I HATE Vince Gill as well...his music is nothing special to me. I even won tickets to see him in concert about 10 years ago, I have to admit that it was the WORSE concert I have ever been to, and would have never had gone if it wasnt for the free tickets.

Carrie Underwood...I like her. Maranda Lambert and Julie Roberts...they have a couple good songs, but nothing that I really liked a whole lot. Believe is a good song, but I would have chosen Sugarland.

Oh well...what do we know anyways?

Thankfully I'm not Amy Grant's judge, but it did give a bad example by her leaving her husband for another man.

Amy Grant left her husband for another man? Where have I been, I had no idea.
